Back in 2019, Goichi Suda (Suda51) and Hidetaka Suehiro (Swery65) announced that they would be working together on a horror game called Hotel Barcelona. It was still in conceptual stages at the time, but at TGS 2023’s Xbox Digital Broadcast, the game was officially revealed as a “2.5D slasher film parodic action” game in which you’re caught in a time loop filled with serial killers and other threats, with only your past selves there to help you.
The announcement trailer shows off the game’s action and tone, as well as a 2024 release window. An interview with Suda51 and Swery65 sheds additional light on the game and its development. You will battle your way through seven worlds, each with a serial killer boss representing various horror film subgenres. For each mission, you’ll equip a melee main weapon and a ranged sub-weapon, with new weapons obtained from treasure chests.
The time loop comes into play with the Slasher Phantom mechanic. When you die and try again, your character from your previous run will continue to move and act as you did in your previous attempt, essentially allowing your past self to help you. Three Slasher Phantoms can be active at a time. However, if you choose a different power-up route when retrying, your Slasher Phantoms will reset.
Hotel Barcelona will be out in 2024 for PC, Xbox, and PS5.
