Portugal-based indie game studio, Astral Shift, has a horror narrative adventure game that’s quite a throwback to 90’s anime and fairy tales with Little Goody Two Shoes.
Square Enix Collective has recently picked up Little Goody Two Shoes and the game serves as the prequel to their previously released game, Pocket Mirror. As the story goes you’ll play as Elise, an ambitious lass who dreams of becoming filthy rich. One day, she discovers a pair of beautiful, shiny red shoes buried in her backyard and becomes bewitched, leading her to the mysterious woods.
This is a narrative adventure game, your choices will have lasting consequences on the outcome of the Little Goody Two Shoes. One of which probably includes death. I played through the introductory part of the game and the 90’s throwback aesthetic not only applies to the art style but to its gameplay too, which reminded me of the PlayStation games I grew up playing. The demo begins by navigating through a horror nightmare section in a house where things are not seemingly as they appear.
There I learned of the survival nature of Little Goody Two Shoes and its hunger system. If you lose all your bread points and leave Elise starving, this can quickly lead to the death ending. Exploring through the house, you’re asked to find keys and solve puzzles all the while avoiding candles. Running into a candle not only reduces your life points but also causes more candles to appear. One of the developers remarked that I had so many candles running around when he glanced at my playthrough of the demo. I’m not entirely sure if that was a good thing or not.
After finding the keys and opening the door I was supposed to, I was awoken from the nightmare and found Elise back in the present-day village of Kieferberg. The demo ends with Elise finding the shiny red shoes and I was treated to a 90’s anime-inspired cutscene.
