In honor of Dungeons & Dragons’ 50th anniversary, Magic: The Gathering will release limited-time cards based on the popular tabletop role-playing game.
Thanks to a press release, we know that the cards will be part of the Secret Lair drop, which will consist of five sets that go on sale later this month, on August 27. Although it’s unclear what most of the cards will be, Wizards of the Coast has confirmed that two of the five cards will be straight out of Larian Studio’s Baldur’s Gate 3. Below is a list of all the sets players will be able to purchase:
- Secret Lair x Dungeons & Dragons®: An Exhibition of Adventure
- Secret Lair x Dungeons & Dragons®: Astarion’s Thirst
- Secret Lair x Dungeons & Dragons®: Karlach’s Rage
- Secret Lair x Dungeons & Dragons®: Death is in the Eyes of the Beholder I
- Secret Lair x Dungeons & Dragons®: Death is in the Eyes of the Beholder II
The Astarion’s Thirst set will, of course, feature Astarion. To summon this 4/4 Legendary Creature, it’ll cost one white and black mana with four uncolor mana. As for his abilities, Astarion will have Deathtouch and Lifelink, and at the beginning of the player’s end step, he can either Feed, which will make opponents lose life equal to the amount of life they lost that turn. Or Friends, which will have the user gain life equal to the amount of life they gained on the same turn.
Needless to say the same goes for the Karlach’s Rage set. She’ll be another Legendary Creature with a 5/4 stat, summoning her will cost one red manda, and four uncolored mana. Her ability will allow all players to untap all attacking creatures during the first combat phase. In addition to that they all gain first strike until the turn ends and after the phase receive an additional combat phase. Players will also have to choose a background.
It’s worth mentioning that this isn’t the first time Baldur’s Gate 3 characters have made their way into Magic: The Gathering. In 2022 Wizards of the Coast released a set called Battle for Baldur’s Gate and it featured various characters from the game.
It’s also been confirmed that the Beholder will be a part of this set. But as of writing, it’s unclear what the card’s abilities will be, as well as the cost and stats. Each set will cost $29.99, and foil variants will cost $39.99.
