Fantasian Neo Dimension: Discovering the Ultimate Illusion Boss Select Feature

I’ve thoroughly gone through Fantasian Neo Dimension having both reviewed the game and written a trophy guide to get all of the PlayStation trophies for the PS5 version of the game. I’ve left very few, if any, stones unturned. However, in a tweet from the 21st, game creator and Final Fantasy dad Hironobu Sakaguchi tweeted out about an area I had never seen before. Once the Void Realm has been completed, a new area opens up if you talk to someone in the Inner Void Realm in front of Leo’s house. It’s difficult to say when this was added as many single-player games from Japan don’t post changelogs but Fantasian has had two major updates in the past month so potentially this could have existed for weeks.

Fantasian Neo Dimension is a RPG created by Final Fantasy’s creator Hironobu Sakaguchi originally released for the Apple Arcade in 2021 under the name Fantasian. Split-up into two parts, the game was praised for its mechanics and art direction but falling somewhat short of people’s expectations. This year, Fantasian was re-released on modern consoles as well as Steam featuring a new difficulty mode, display in high definition, and voice acting in both English and Japanese. This is also the first time Sakaguchi worked with Square-Enix since he left the company in 2003. Last week, Square-Enix released a demo for the game and according to steamdb, a sizable update. There have been two major updates over the past month, one addressing issues where the game would freeze up and another adding in the demo. Rather than speculate, I’ll just assume one of these added in this new area and move on.

Screenshot from the game Fantasian Neo Dimension. The Screenshot shows Leo speaking to a person blocking the entrance to his home. The person says, "Allow me to guide you to a new place where you can relive memories of past battles."

How to Unlock the Ultimate Illusion Boss Select Feature

The new area requires the player to not only beat the game but the post-game dungeon as well. No easy feat, I recommend not only holding off on the post-game dungeon until after you start New Game+ and have at least a full team of level 99 characters. The post-game dungeon is split into three parts, the Outer, Middle, and Inner Void Realms. Each realm consists of an assortment of bosses you’ve fought before but more powerful, followed by a fourth boss fight with an ever-increasing in power Shadow of Yim. On finishing the Void Realm, make your way back to the Inner Void Realm, a frozen in time shadow version of the town Vibra, and make your way to Leo’s house. Once there, speak to the person blocking the door.

On warping to the Inner Void Realm, Leo will comment;

“Just when I thought the void couldn’t get any deeper or darker…”

Speaking to the person in front of Leo’s house will provide an equally ominous comment;

“Have you ever hoped for a rematch with a strong foe you’ve fought before? Allow me to guide you to a new place where you can relive memories of past battles.”

What is the Ultimate Illusion in Fantasian Neo Dimension?

You’ll be given access to warp to the Ultimate Illusion, a very small area with a single save point and boss crystal. Interacting with the boss crystal will give you a list of every boss in the game, allowing you to fight a slightly more difficult version of the boss. If your party was locked to a specific group in the story, that’s the party you’ll be given during the boss fight. On completion, a little icon will be added to the boss entry showing that you’ve beaten the boss on that run of the game, be it new game, new game+, or new game++. Along with the indicator that you’re a true champion of gaming, you’ll also be given 2 SP capsules, an item which allows you to spend points on the growth map.

And if you haven’t picked up on it, Ultimate Illusion isn’t just some random name. Ultimate Illusion is an ability that Gilgamesh from the Final Fantasy series uses as his ultimate attack. It’s very cute that the wandering swordsman would make his mark on a game that so perfectly captures the genre in current year. Of course, this is only made even more beautiful considering Fantasian Neo Dimension allows you to choose which soundtrack to use for the battle music, thanks to the musical contributions by legendary composer Nobuo Uematsu, among many greats. The Final Fantasy VII Rebirth arrangement of Battle at the Big Bridge featured is another nice addition related to Gilgamesh.

Potentially, this could be a great way to farm extra SP capsules, a limited item in the game. When this was added, who can say. Potentially, it’s been here all along and I just never noticed it. However, it’s a very cool feature and it doesn’t surprise me that one of the grandfathers of RPGs thought of everything in this game. Fantasian Neo Dimension is available on the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC by way of Steam and has a free demo available on all platforms with the exception of PlayStation 4.
