After being teased forever, Square Enix has finally shown its first bits of gameplay for the Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake. Taking the role of the descendants of Erdrick, players will go back and get to experience the first two Dragon Quest games in glorious HD-2D. Square-Enix has also confirmed the list of platforms that Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake will release on when it releases later this year. Sadly, we still don’t have a release date.
I’m not sure I’ll ever get tired of that Dragon Quest theme music. Unsurprisingly, Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake looks exactly like Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake. If you’re wondering why they did III first, aside from the fact that it’s a better game, it also takes place chronologically before Dragon Quest I & II. Square-Enix has yet to release any real information about the game, even this trailer doesn’t show much outside from a few iconic story moments and wandering around the world. Heck, we don’t even get to see any combat. Not that we don’t know what that looks like. As exciting as it is to see Dragon Quest, and it’s nice we’re getting these remakes to tide us over until Dragon Quest XII releases more info, the only real information we’re getting is the platforms that are available. And the platform list is about as expected as the gameplay delivered in this trailer.
Developed by SQUARE ENIX Team Asano, HD-2D is a critically acclaimed graphic style that combines pixel art characters with 3D backgrounds, then adds high-definition visual effects to deliver a nostalgic, yet fresh visual style. DRAGON QUEST I & II HD-2D Remake is the sixth title produced in the HD-2D style.
Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake Release Platforms
I’m not sure why this was contested but I think people were worried because Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake was shaky on its release platforms. Also, sadly, there are a few Dragon Quest titles that are locked on PC/Switch that really should be made available on other consoles. I’m looking at you Dragon Quest Treasures/Monsters. I can happily confirm that Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake is coming to PC via Steam and Microsoft Store, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch in 2025. There’s no official release date yet but you can wishlist the game on multiple platforms in the links provided.
