Konami is bringing the Gradius series back in a big way with Gradius Origins, a new collection launching August 7 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam. Not only does this collection include seven classic entries from the franchise, but it also introduces Salamander III, the first new game in the series in over 15 years. Digital pre-orders are available now, while a physical edition from Limited Run Games will be up for pre-order from March 28 through May.
A Definitive Collection of Arcade Legends
Gradius Origins brings together a lineup of classic shoot-’em-up titles from the 1980s and 1990s, preserving the fast-paced space battles, iconic power-up systems, and legendary boss fights that defined the genre. The collection also honors the famous Konami Code, which debuted in the original Gradius and became one of gaming’s most enduring secrets.
Included Titles:
- Gradius (multiple regional versions, including Nemesis)
- Gradius II: Gofer no Yabou (Vulcan Venture in some regions)
- Gradius III (various Japanese and Asian versions)
- Salamander (aka Life Force in some regions)
- Life Force (Japanese version)
- Salamander 2
- Salamander III (brand-new game)
With a total of seven games and 18 regional versions, Gradius Origins delivers one of the most comprehensive collections in shoot-’em-up history.
Salamander III – A New Chapter in the Gradius Saga
The biggest surprise of the collection is Salamander III, the first new game in the Gradius universe in over 15 years. Set after the events of the Salamander Wars, players take control of a fighter pilot from the planet Lattice, teaming up with the Big Viper – Type R to take on the revived Bacterian forces. Staying true to the classic 2D sprite aesthetic, Salamander III combines old-school visuals with modern mechanics.
New Features for a Modern Audience
While Gradius Origins retains its retro arcade charm, it also introduces several quality-of-life upgrades to make the experience more accessible:
- Online Leaderboards – Compete against players worldwide for the top score.
- Rewind Feature – Undo costly mistakes and retry tough sections.
- Quick Save/Load – Pick up where you left off at any time.
- Reduced Hit Detection – A more forgiving experience for newcomers.
