11 bit studios is returning to where it all began with Frostpunk 1886—a complete reimagining of the original society survival game, rebuilt from the ground up in Unreal Engine with new features, systems, and long-requested mod support.
Announced today, Frostpunk 1886 isn’t just a visual overhaul. It expands upon the foundations of 2018’s Frostpunk with new laws, gameplay mechanics, and even a brand-new “Purpose” path that gives veterans a reason to brave the Great Storm once more. Named after a key moment in the franchise’s lore, 1886 revisits the descent of the Great Storm and the early struggles of New London’s citizens in what promises to be a deeper and more reactive survival experience.
New Engine, New Possibilities
The original Frostpunk ran on the studio’s in-house Liquid Engine, which limited future content updates and community modding. With Unreal Engine now powering Frostpunk 1886, 11 bit studios has confirmed that full mod support will finally be available, opening the door for fans to shape their own harsh realities in the frozen wasteland.
While Frostpunk 2 continues development alongside console releases and new DLC drops, Frostpunk 1886 represents a parallel path: a modern re-envisioning of the story and systems that defined the series, with more content planned beyond launch.
A Glimpse at What’s Coming:
- Fully reimagined Frostpunk built in Unreal Engine
- New laws, systems, and gameplay mechanics
- A brand-new “Purpose” path for experienced players
- Full mod support and expandable post-launch platform
- Set during the pivotal year 1886, the dawn of the Great Storm
- Launching in 2027 on PC and consoles
More info is expected in the coming months, but for now, Frostpunk fans can prepare for a return to the cold—only colder.
