BitCraft Online Launches in Early Access June 20, Will Be Open-Source

Clockwork Labs wants players to do more than just explore and build in BitCraft Online—they want you to help develop it.

BitCraft Online, the community sandbox MMORPG from Clockwork Labs, is officially launching into Early Access on June 20, 2025, via Steam. In a bold move that sets it apart from traditional MMOs, the studio is also open-sourcing the game’s codebase, inviting hobbyists, modders, and developers to help shape the game’s future from the inside out.

Set in a seamless, persistent world, BitCraft Online encourages players to forge their own destinies—whether through farming, adventuring, crafting, city building, or political intrigue. Everything in the game’s evolving ecosystem is shaped by player actions, from the structure of society to the balance of power between player-run cities and factions. With no separate servers, the game world is shared and shaped by all who enter it.

But now, that sandbox is about to get even bigger. Powered by its custom-built backend, SpacetimeDB, BitCraft Online’s open-source model means that anyone with the skills and passion can explore the game’s inner workings, build tools, propose changes, or develop entirely new features.

“Open-sourcing is more than just a technical decision—it’s a philosophical one,” said Tyler Cloutier, co-founder of Clockwork Labs. “We’re not just giving players a sandbox to play in—we’re handing them the blueprints to the sandbox itself.”

This marks one of the first times a commercial MMO has launched with an open-source codebase from the outset of Early Access. Developers will be able to contribute to the game under a permissive license, and Clockwork Labs hopes this transparency will lead to faster innovation and deeper community engagement.
