With just weeks to go before its launch, Hell is Us is giving players a deeper look into one of its most intriguing features—its mysterious, story-driven dungeon system. Developer Rogue Factor released a new gameplay video showcasing the game’s unique approach to exploration and combat inside the dungeons of Hadea, the game’s war-torn setting. Narrated by creative and art director Jonathan Jacques-Belletête, the video offers an overview of the design philosophy behind these moody underground encounters, highlighting the game’s commitment to immersion and challenge without hand-holding.
Dungeons with Purpose and Personality
Unlike optional side content in many adventure games, the dungeons in Hell is Us are core to the game’s narrative and worldbuilding. Each one is a handcrafted, atmospheric space loaded with puzzle-solving, combat, and lore. They play a key role in unraveling the deeper history of Hadea, offering clues to the region’s dark secrets and the strange supernatural forces at play.
Every dungeon concludes with a climactic boss fight and a major revelation—often shifting your understanding of both the protagonist Rémi’s journey and the land itself.
“Player-Plattering” Over Hand-Holding
The dungeon system is built around Hell is Us’s “player-plattering” design philosophy. As Jacques-Belletête explains, this means the game avoids intrusive guidance in favor of letting players explore, observe, and intuit their path forward. You won’t be following floating icons to objectives—instead, you’ll be studying your environment, deciphering visual cues, and mastering the tools you’ve been given.
From melee combat against haunting, monument-like creatures to logic-based puzzles and environmental storytelling, the dungeons promise a varied and rewarding adventure for players who enjoy being immersed and challenged.
What is Hell is Us?
Hell is Us is a third-person action-adventure game combining intense melee combat, environmental exploration, and a narrative-driven experience. Set in the fictional country of Hadea, a place torn apart by civil war and mysterious phenomena, players take on the role of Rémi, a man searching for his past in a land closed off from the world.
Strange creatures—resembling warped, living monuments—have begun to appear across the landscape, and only specially forged weapons can take them down. With no quest markers or HUD clutter, Hell is Us invites players to explore freely, think critically, and uncover its secrets on their own terms.
