Dono’s Tale Brings Cozy Retro Platforming to Consoles and PC in 2026

Independent developer Super Item Studios has announced that their retro-inspired platformer Dono’s Tale will launch in early 2026 for Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox, and PC via Steam, GOG, and itch.io. Drawing heavy inspiration from the 16- and 32-bit eras, Dono’s Tale blends vibrant hand-drawn visuals with a catchy retro-flavored soundtrack, aiming to capture the charm of 1990s platformers while adding fresh twists to the genre.

The game’s Kickstarter campaign soared past its funding goal in under 72 hours and will continue until August 24, offering stretch goals such as two-player couch co-op and a special guest track from Soyo Oka (Super Mario Kart, Pilotwings, SimCity SNES).

Nostalgia with a Modern Edge

In Dono’s Tale, players guide Dono—a hungry, bowtie-wearing dragon—through 30+ stages spread across seven whimsical worlds. The mission? Reclaim a stolen fruit hoard while dashing, climbing, shooting, and chaining moves together for fast-paced, skillful platforming.

Super Item Studios has layered in mechanics that reward experimentation, letting players combine mobility and combat techniques in creative ways. Boss battles add variety, with each featuring unique mechanics designed to test both reflexes and strategy.

Inspirations Behind the Adventure

Developer Dagoberto “Dago” Duarte cites inspirations ranging from Yoshi’s Island, Mega Man X, and Donkey Kong Country to lesser-known titles like Astal and Silhouette Mirage. Gameplay pacing draws on speedrunning and fighting games such as Super Smash Bros. Melee and Street Fighter Alpha 2, while graphical elements borrow from anime and manga influences like JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure.

“We revisit our favorite scenarios, break down what made them fun, and reimagine them in a new way,” said Duarte. “The result is something nostalgic yet fresh.”
