John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando Gameplay Revealed at Gamescom – Launching Early 2026

The master of ’80s action-horror is back. At Gamescom Opening Night Live 2025, Saber Interactive and Focus Entertainment revealed the first gameplay for John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando, a wild, co-op FPS where slime-covered undead hordes meet buddy-movie banter and off-road vehicle mayhem. Fans won’t have to wait too long: the game is officially set to launch in early 2026 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

From Soil to Scum: The Toxic Setup

Set in a near future gone horribly wrong, Toxic Commando imagines an experimental energy project gone haywire, corrupting the Earth itself and unleashing legions of mutated undead. To fight back, a desperate scientist assembles not the most elite soldiers, but the only affordable option: The Toxic Commando.

The result? A pulpy mashup of Ghostbusters meets Mad Max, with all the over-the-top bravado and gallows humor you’d expect from something with John Carpenter’s name stamped on it.

Gameplay: Guns, Guts, and Gear

The new trailer shows off fast-paced FPS action and vehicle-based carnage powered by Saber’s Swarm Engine, the same tech behind World War Z: Aftermath and Space Marine 2.

  • Four-player co-op with full crossplay across PC and consoles
  • Huge hordes and massive bosses that fill the battlefield
  • Buddy-movie banter and humor, straight from ’80s action-horror
  • Off-road vehicle combat on slime-corrupted terrain
  • Explosive weapons & abilities, including katanas, grenades, and customizable loadouts

Players will pick a class, squad up, upgrade skills, and carve their way through ever-escalating challenges, all while trying to stop the Sludge God from turning the Earth into an apocalyptic wasteland.
