PlayerUnknown Productions Opens Prologue: Go Wayback! Beta on Steam and Epic

PlayerUnknown Productions has officially opened the gates to its upcoming single-player survival game, Prologue: Go Wayback!, now available in Open Beta on Steam and the Epic Games Store. Players can jump into this in-development build to explore billions of procedurally generated worlds, each offering unpredictable terrain, harsh weather conditions, and unforgiving survival challenges.

A new Open Beta trailer offers a glimpse at the game’s blend of realism, exploration, and emergent gameplay. Every session generates a completely unique 64 km² map—crafted using the studio’s in-house, artist-guided machine learning tools and powered by Unreal Engine 5.

A Survival Journey with No Hand-Holding

Prologue: Go Wayback! drops players into a vast wilderness inspired by the Czech Bohemia region, tasking them with reaching the elusive Weather Tower. There are no quest markers or scripted paths—navigation depends entirely on reading a compass, studying maps, and recognizing natural landmarks like rivers, valleys, and ridges.

Survival is about more than finding your way. Players must manage body temperature by scavenging better clothing or building fires, forage for food, locate clean water, and plan their routes from shelter to shelter while storms, blizzards, and thunderstorms threaten to derail their progress.

The game’s terrain generation is driven by machine learning models trained on open-source geographical data. This system produces believable natural landscapes filled with procedurally placed environmental features—trees, cliffs, hills, rivers, and shelters—making each map feel organic and unique.

According to PlayerUnknown, the Open Beta is the result of six months of community playtesting:

“We have a great survival experience with millions of maps for players to explore in the Open Beta, and over the coming months leading up to our Early Access launch, we plan to add more features to further customise your preferred way to play.”

Upcoming updates will introduce new features, including a Map Editor that will let players draw their own terrain or import images to shape their worlds.

A Step Towards Project Artemis

Prologue: Go Wayback! is more than a standalone survival experience—it’s the first of three planned titles contributing to PlayerUnknown Productions’ ambitious Project Artemis, a long-term initiative to build technology for massive-scale emergent gameplay.

The studio’s proprietary Melba engine—already showcased in the playable tech demo Preface: Undiscovered World—will continue evolving as these projects unfold, with Go Wayback! serving as a milestone in both technology and design.

The Open Beta will remain live until Early Access launches on Steam and the Epic Games Store, with regular updates planned. Players can share feedback and get involved with future playtests via the official PlayerUnknown Productions Discord.
