Herobeat Studios, the BAFTA-winning developer behind Endling: Extinction is Forever, has announced its next project: Rewilders: The Lost Spring, a genre-bending action roguelite with creature collecting and metroidvania-style exploration. This marks the studio’s second game and its first self-published project, with launch details to be revealed in the future.
The game will be shown to select media for the first time at Gamescom 2025 in Cologne, Germany.
A Story of Survival, Restoration, and Choice
In Rewilders: The Lost Spring, players step into the shoes of Abi, a survivor who returns to the poisoned surface of a ruined world to search for her lost family and heal the land. Along the way, she’ll encounter corrupted biomes, hostile enemies, and the Hântu, mystical, once-extinct creatures that can be collected, leveled, and evolved to aid her in battle.
Every run sends players into a dangerous open world with roguelite systems, randomized rewards, enemies, and starting points, but progress carries forward through permanent upgrades and base-building. Narrative choices allow players to shape the outcome of their journey: restore the Memory of the world that was, or embrace Hatred to reshape it into something new.
The reveal trailer also features an original theme song performed by Julie Elven (Horizon Zero Dawn).
Gameplay Features
Herobeat promises an experience that blends emotional storytelling with deep systems:
- Creature Collecting: Recruit Hântu, each with unique combat abilities, passive buffs, and status effects.
- Third-Person Action Combat: Mix melee, ranged attacks, and companion skills for fast-paced encounters.
- Metroidvania Progression: Unlock traversal tools like grappling hooks, gliders, and wall-running to explore deeper biomes.
- Roguelite Replayability: Randomized elements ensure no two runs are the same, with forgiving respawn mechanics.
- Base-Building: Cultivate plants and fruits aboard your skyship base to permanently strengthen your team.
- Narrative Paths: Choose between Memory or Hatred as thematic alignments that alter gameplay and progression.
From Endling to Rewilders
Herobeat’s debut title Endling: Extinction is Forever earned acclaim for its poignant eco-driven narrative, winning the BAFTA Games Beyond Entertainment Award (2022) and earning a Games for Impact nomination at The Game Awards.
While Rewilders moves into a new genre space, its DNA remains the same: heartfelt storytelling, evocative art, and an ecological message inspired by the works of Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli.
