The centuries-old game of chess is getting a wild new twist. Chess Arena, a chess-inspired battle royale from indie studio Millions of Monsters, will enter Closed Beta on October 25, running through November 2 on PC via Steam. Players can sign up for a chance to join the Beta ahead of launch through the game’s official site.
A New Kind of Chess Match
Chess Arena transforms traditional chess into a fast-paced real-time strategy brawler, pitting up to 40 players against each other on a massive, hazard-filled chessboard. Players will battle to be the last King standing in a format that blends tactical precision with the frantic pace of a modern multiplayer arena.
Each match takes place across a giant map divided into multiple biomes and terrain types, challenging players to adapt as the poison storm closes in. Pieces move freely in real time, and players can pick from a roster of champions with unique ability kits that dramatically alter the flow of combat. By defeating opponents and completing PvE challenges, players can level up mid-match, unlocking new powers and strategies.
From the Mind of Alexandra Botez
Chess Arena was co-founded by Alexandra Botez, an international chess master and one of the biggest chess personalities in the world, with over 4 million followers across platforms. Botez’s goal with Chess Arena is to reimagine chess for a new generation, keeping its depth and intellect while infusing it with the energy, accessibility, and unpredictability of online multiplayer games.
Closed Beta Events and Community Plans
Throughout the Closed Beta period, Chess Arena will host community events, content drops, and in-game prizes to reward players who dive into the action. Millions of Monsters has also teased long-term plans for ranked modes, seasonal updates, and additional champions as the game evolves through testing.
