Developer Frogwares has announced that its upcoming Lovecraftian survival horror game, The Sinking City 2, will now launch in the first half of 2026 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Alongside the announcement, the studio shared 13 eerie new screenshots highlighting the game’s haunting cityscapes, grotesque creatures, and decaying world inspired by H.P. Lovecraft’s mythos.
While no firm release date had been set, the team initially aimed for a 2025 release but decided to take additional time due to ongoing challenges developing amid the war in Ukraine and the creative demands of shifting genres.
“Developing a game during a war isn’t something you can ever really prepare for,” said Sergiy Oganesyan, Head of Publishing at Frogwares. “With constant blackouts and drone attacks disrupting life and work, it just doesn’t make sense to rush the final stages of development. We’d rather take our time and deliver something we’re proud of.”
A New Chapter in Survival Horror
Unlike previous entries, The Sinking City 2 marks Frogwares’ first full leap into the survival horror genre, moving away from their roots in detective adventures. According to Lead Game Designer Alexander Gresko, this shift has brought new challenges in pacing, combat, and tension-building.
“We’ve always loved survival horror as fans, but making one ourselves meant rethinking everything we knew about game design,” Gresko said. “It’s been exciting, but it’s definitely made development slower.”
The team emphasized that while the new release window is set for early 2026, no exact date will be announced until the studio is certain, given the unpredictability of current conditions.
Lovecraftian Terror Reimagined
Set in a flooded version of Arkham, Massachusetts, The Sinking City 2 plunges players into a world of madness, decay, and cosmic dread. Players must scavenge for resources, fight monstrous entities, and uncover the truth behind a supernatural catastrophe that has consumed the city.
Key features include:
- 1920s-inspired weapons and melee combat.
- Survival-based exploration with limited resources and environmental hazards.
- Optional investigations that expand the lore and uncover alternate outcomes.
- A morally grey story steeped in cults, rituals, and incomprehensible horrors.
The Depths Await
Frogwares will share more gameplay footage and updates in the coming months as the game enters its final stages of production. The Sinking City 2 is set to release in the first half of 2026 on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
