NIS America has announced a new publishing partnership with Gemdrops and Broccoli for the upcoming musical action RPG Etrange Overlord, set to release on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and PC via Steam in 2026.
From Sohei Niikawa, the mind behind Disgaea and Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure, Etrange Overlord combines fast-paced RPG action with rhythm-infused mechanics, eccentric humor, and plenty of heart. The game’s debut trailer offers a glimpse into the chaotic charm of its underworld setting.
From Execution to Overlord
Players take on the role of Étrange von Rosenburg, a sweets-obsessed duke’s daughter who is wrongly executed for assassinating the king. Instead of meeting her end, Étrange wakes up in hell, where she promptly decides to seize control of her fiery new home.
What follows is a wild, sugar-fueled adventure brimming with witty dialogue, musical flair, and Niikawa’s signature over-the-top storytelling.
A Whirlwind of Action and Rhythm
At the heart of Etrange Overlord is its unique revolving lane mechanic, where items, buffs, and even characters spin dynamically around the battlefield. Players will shoot, dodge, and slash through chaotic encounters while timing their attacks and movement in rhythm with the action.
Beyond the single-player campaign, Etrange Overlord also offers a 2–4 player multiplayer mode where friends can join forces to tackle challenging, fast-paced stages.
Sweet Rewards and Stunning Designs
Between battles, players can indulge Étrange’s insatiable sweet tooth to gain temporary buffs and bonuses, adding a lighthearted twist to her demonic conquest.
The game’s cast and world are brought to life by Shinichiro Otsuka, the renowned illustrator best known for Re:Zero – Starting Life in Another World. His striking character art adds flair and charm to every flamboyant demon and candy-coated battlefield.
A Hellishly Fun Afterlife Awaits
Described as a story filled with “humor, heart, and musical numbers,” Etrange Overlord promises a blend of comedy, chaos, and catchy tunes. Players can expect to assemble a colorful army of subordinates, each with unique abilities and personalities, and build their way to demonic dominance.
A Limited Edition version of the game will also be available, with more details set to be revealed on Thursday, November 13.
