Koei Tecmo has announced that Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake will launch on March 12, 2026, with digital pre-orders open today on PlayStation Store. The 2003 horror classic is being rebuilt from the ground up with new visuals, reworked sound design, and refined controls.
The remake follows twin sisters Mio and Mayu Amakura as they explore Minakami Village, a cursed, abandoned settlement haunted by restless spirits. Using the Camera Obscura, a mysterious device that captures ghosts on film, players must fend off wraiths and uncover the village’s dark secrets.
Remade from the Ground Up
Every aspect of the remake has been overhauled. The lighting and textures now highlight the eerie stillness of Minakami Village, while the sound design uses subtle audio cues to heighten tension. Characters’ skin, clothing, and animations have been fully updated to match the game’s new cinematic presentation.
Ghosts can now appear without warning, grabbing you as you reach for an item or lurking behind recently opened doors. These encounters cause Spirit Power Damage, forcing quick reactions and leading to intense Camera Obscura battles.
New Features and Expanded Combat
The iconic Camera Obscura system returns with new mechanics:
- Focus and zoom functions for precision shots
- Switchable filters for combat and exploration variety
A new “Hold Hands” mechanic lets players physically guide Mayu through the haunted village. Holding her hand restores Health and Spirit Power, but if she falls or is attacked, you’ll need to help her up, reinforcing the emotional connection between the sisters.
Digital Deluxe Edition Details
Alongside the standard release, the Digital Deluxe Edition includes:
- Base game
- Digital soundtrack
- Digital art book
- Deluxe Bonus Set: Deluxe Charm, Lace Gloves (White/Black), and Japanese Gothic (Left Wing/Right Wing) costumes
A Digital Deluxe Upgrade will also be available separately for those who purchase the standard version.
