Koei Tecmo and Team Ninja have unveiled the next major expansion for Nioh 3, confirming the Bakumatsu period as a brand-new setting where players will battle. The game launches on PlayStation 5 and Steam on February 6, 2026, bringing fans back into the series’ signature blend of brutal yokai action and historical fantasy.
This marks the first time the franchise has ventured into the late 1800s, an era of political upheaval, modernization, and the final days of the samurai.
A Demon-Twisted Kyoto in the Late Samurai Era
Set in 19th-century Kyoto, the Bakumatsu chapter shows iconic landmarks such as Kiyomizu Temple and Honnoji overtaken by the corrupting influence of the Crucible. These familiar locations are reimagined as warped, hostile arenas filled with new yokai threats and environmental transformations unique to the era.
Nioh 3’s time-hopping structure now spans Edo, Sengoku, Heian, and Bakumatsu, each offering distinct enemies, storylines, and legendary figures to encounter.
Face the Shinsengumi and Their Devastating Modern Weapons
For the first time in the series, players will face the Shinsengumi, the shogunate’s elite military police. Unlike enemies from previous eras, Shinsengumi forces wield modern weaponry, including firearms and Gatling guns, introducing ranged pressure and multi-directional fire patterns that push the combat engine into new territory.
These enemies are designed as tough, unpredictable human adversaries that stand toe-to-toe with the game’s fiercest yokai.
Meet Takasugi Shinsaku, Okita Soji, and More Historical Figures
The Bakumatsu timeline introduces a new cast tied to the era’s political turmoil. Protagonist Tokugawa Takechiyo will cross paths with figures including:
- Takasugi Shinsaku – the Chōshū revolutionary
- Okita Soji – famed Shinsengumi captain
- Tokugawa Yoshinobu – the last shogun of the Edo shogunate
Each brings their own narrative threads that intertwine with Nioh 3’s supernatural conflict and multi-era storyline.
