With the Emperor’s blessing, Owlcat Games has officially launched the alpha build of Warhammer 40,000: Dark Heresy on Steam. Available now for Founders who purchased the Developer’s Digital Pack or Collector’s Edition, the alpha invites players to step into the role of an Inquisition acolyte and begin rooting out heresy across the dangerous Calixis Sector.
The alpha marks the first public hands-on opportunity with Owlcat’s next CRPG following Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader, offering an early look at its darker investigative focus and revamped systems.
Hunt Heretics Across the Calixis Sector
In Dark Heresy’s alpha, players serve the Holy Orders of the Emperor’s Inquisition, investigating cults, conspiracies, and hidden threats that endanger Humanity. Rather than focusing solely on large-scale warfare, Dark Heresy emphasizes investigation, interrogation, and moral judgment, challenging players to uncover the truth and decide who deserves punishment.
The alpha features an estimated 10–15 hours of gameplay, introducing players to the foundations of the story, the Inquisition’s inner workings, and the game’s new detective system, which emphasizes clue-gathering, suspect interrogation, and drawing conclusions that can permanently alter the narrative.
A Diverse Cast of Companions — Even Xenos
Players won’t face the horrors of the Imperium alone. The alpha includes a selection of companions drawn from across the Warhammer 40,000 universe, some of them decidedly unorthodox allies for an Inquisitor.
Available companions include a Kroot outcast, a lethal Medicae specialist, an unusually intelligent Ogryn, and several other acolytes. Each companion brings their own skills, perspectives, and narrative implications, reinforcing Dark Heresy’s emphasis on choice and consequence.
Choices That Shape the World
True to Owlcat’s RPG pedigree, Dark Heresy places a heavy focus on reactive storytelling. Characters remember how players act toward those they accuse, toward those they spare, and how they wield their authority. These decisions don’t just affect dialogue, but can reshape storylines, relationships, and even the environment itself, ensuring that no two investigations unfold the same way.
Revamped Combat and Vertical Exploration
The alpha also highlights several gameplay improvements over Rogue Trader. Combat features new tactical options, including suppressing enemies by targeting weak points or breaking their resolve without killing them outright. Movement has also been expanded vertically, allowing for more dynamic encounters and positioning during both exploration and combat.
Alpha Will Remain Open for Founders
The Warhammer 40,000: Dark Heresy alpha will remain available for several months, and players can join at any time by becoming Founders. Owlcat Games has confirmed that player feedback will directly influence development, shaping the upcoming beta and final release.
