Koei Tecmo America and developer Team Ninja have announced that a playable demo for Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake will arrive on March 5, 2026, ahead of the game’s full release later in the month. The demo will be available on PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam, giving players an early look at the reimagined survival horror classic.
A Classic Horror Story Reimagined
Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake follows twin sisters Mio and Mayu as they wander into an abandoned village haunted by vengeful spirits. Armed only with the Camera Obscura, players must fend off supernatural threats while uncovering the tragic history buried within the village. This remake introduces new gameplay systems, additional locations, expanded side stories, and a brand-new ending featuring the song “Utsushie,” composed by Tsuki Amano.
New Gameplay Systems and Locations
The remake expands the original experience with new mechanics such as Broken Spirit Stones, which allow players to explore fragments of other characters’ pasts and uncover new lore. Newly added locations, including the Umbral Mound and Eikado Temple, offer fresh environments filled with unsettling atmosphere and narrative depth.
Combat encounters have also evolved, with spirits becoming more aggressive as the story progresses. Certain enemies can enter a crimson state, regenerating health while attacking faster and harder. Players can counter these threats by enhancing the Camera Obscura with Prayer Beads, resetting upgrades with Reversion Beads, and using Special Shots with customizable filters that support different combat strategies.
Photo Mode and Exploration Features
Beyond combat, the Camera Obscura plays a key role in exploration and purification puzzles. Players can photograph Twin Dolls scattered throughout the village, purifying them to unlock new rewards. A newly added Photo Mode lets players capture eerie in-game moments with frames, stickers, and visual effects, adding a creative layer to the horror experience.
SILENT HILL f Collaboration Announced
Koei Tecmo also revealed a collaboration with Silent Hill f, the upcoming entry in Konami’s long-running psychological horror franchise. Collaboration costumes inspired by Silent Hill f will be released as free downloadable content at a later date, with additional details to be shared in the coming weeks.
