Genigods Lab has officially unveiled Genigods: Nezha, a new single-player action RPG inspired by ancient Chinese mythology. Built in Unreal Engine 5 and optimized for PlayStation 5 in collaboration with Sony, the game is currently in development for PC and PS5, with a planned 2028 release.
The reveal introduces a premium, pay-upfront action RPG that blends hardcore combat with large-scale mythological storytelling, positioning Genigods: Nezha as an ambitious new entry in the genre.
A Mythic Origin Story Rooted in Chinese Legend
Set against the backdrop of Chinese genesis mythology, Genigods: Nezha places players in the role of the Spirit Pearl, the first spark of life forged by Nüwa, the Goddess of Life, from earth, water, and fire. Over the course of the narrative, players evolve from a celestial artifact into the first human, before being reborn as Nezha, the legendary rebel deity.
The journey unfolds alongside iconic mythological figures, including Yi, the sun-feller, and Yu, the flood-tamer. Accompanying Nezha is the Heart of Sacred Water, a sentient gift from Nüwa that grows alongside the player and serves as both a companion and a core gameplay mechanic, aiding puzzle-solving, combat, and uncovering the truth behind the fractured world.
High-Intensity Combat Across Heaven and Earth
Combat in Genigods: Nezha is designed to flow seamlessly between ground and aerial encounters, allowing players to shift stances mid-fight and chain devastating combos. Mythic abilities can be temporarily awakened to enhance attacks, while treasures discovered throughout the world can be combined to create unique skills and combat styles.
Drawing inspiration from Bruce Lee’s “Be Water” philosophy and Jeet Kune Do, Nezha’s combat techniques emphasize adaptability, precision, and timing. Water-based abilities allow players to condense power into focused, armor-breaking strikes or unleash sweeping attacks to control crowds, rewarding defensive play, reactive counters, and perfectly timed parries.
Colossal Battles and Legendary Feats
Leveraging Unreal Engine 5, Genigods: Nezha features massive mythological set pieces that allow players to climb and battle colossal gods whose bodies form the battlefield itself. Players will traverse towering divine forms, scale the legendary Sun Tree with the help of the giant Kuafu, and confront the catastrophic Nine Suns in a bid to restore balance between the mortal and celestial realms.
These large-scale encounters are designed to deliver a uniquely Chinese interpretation of epic action, blending vertical traversal, environmental combat, and cinematic spectacle.
A Proven Team Behind the Vision
Genigods Lab is a 100-person studio previously responsible for the critically and commercially successful My Hero Academia mobile game published by Sony Crunchyroll. The team also developed the Condor Heroes mobile series, which has surpassed 10 million downloads worldwide.
According to Erdi Yao, Co-Founder and Head of Creative & Design, the studio’s goal is to allow players to actively shape the mythology itself. Rather than simply retelling a legend, Genigods: Nezha lets players carve their own place within it through their actions and choices.
