Scott Pilgrim EX Gameplay Overview Shows Off Quests, Exploration, and Toronto Brawling

Following its surprise appearance during yesterday’s Nintendo Direct, Scott Pilgrim EX is back in the spotlight with a brand-new gameplay overview that dives deep into its quest-driven structure, explorable Toronto setting, and signature beat ’em up chaos. Developed and published by Tribute Games in collaboration with Universal, the co-operative adventure-brawler launches March 3 on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2.

The newly released gameplay footage highlights how Scott Pilgrim EX expands on classic beat ’em up foundations by letting players freely explore an interconnected version of Toronto, rather than pushing them through a single scrolling path. Shops, NPCs, hidden challenges, and boss encounters are scattered throughout the city, rewarding players who take the time to explore between high-energy brawls.

A Quest-Focused Take on Classic Beat ’Em Up Action

At its core, Scott Pilgrim EX blends fast-paced combat with RPG-style quest design. As Scott, Ramona, and their allies punch their way through demons, robots, and militant vegans, they’ll encounter NPCs offering quests that span multiple locations across Toronto. Completing these objectives unlocks powerful upgrades and gameplay-altering rewards, encouraging players to revisit areas and fully engage with the city’s many districts.

The gameplay overview also teases secrets hidden throughout the environment, making exploration just as important as mastering combos. From shops stocked with helpful items to optional challenges tucked away off the beaten path, Scott Pilgrim EX aims to reward curiosity as much as combat skill.

A Playable Roster Packed With Fan Favorites

Players can form a four-person co-op squad from a roster filled with familiar faces from the Scott Pilgrim universe. Scott Pilgrim and Ramona Flowers lead the charge, but unlikely allies like Roxie Richter, Lucas Lee, and Matthew Patel are also fully playable. Fan-favorite Robot-01 joins the lineup as well, with one additional character still waiting to be revealed.

Each character features a unique moveset inspired by their appearances throughout the franchise, allowing teams to mix and match playstyles while upgrading their fighters into Toronto’s ultimate defenders.

Saving Toronto, the Band, and the Timeline Itself

The story of Scott Pilgrim EX kicks off when members of Sex Bob-omb are kidnapped and their instruments stolen, throwing Toronto into chaos under the control of rival gangs. Scott and Ramona must fight across the city’s streets, beaches, and even through time itself to save the band, restore order, and stop the city from falling apart.

Combat leans heavily into environmental interaction, letting players weaponize everything from baseball bats and turnips to more unconventional demonic tools. The game features a brand-new storyline co-written by Bryan Lee O’Malley and Tribute Games, alongside an all-new soundtrack from Anamanaguchi, marking a bold new chapter for the franchise.
