Warhammer 40,000: Darktide Beyond the Hive Update Adds Expeditions Mode

Developer Fatshark has announced the “Beyond the Hive” update for Warhammer 40,000: Darktide, introducing a brand-new Expeditions Mode that sends players beyond the city of Tertium and into the hostile wastelands of Atoma Prime. The free update launches on March 17, 2026, bringing one of the game’s largest content additions since release.

For the first time, players will venture outside the hive’s walls into the polluted and dangerous landscapes surrounding the planet’s massive urban strongholds.

A New Battlefield Outside the Hive

Expeditions Mode expands the scope of Darktide’s missions by taking players into the desolate plains of Atoma Prime, where squads must search for valuable Tech-Remnants while investigating points of interest scattered across the map.

Unlike traditional missions inside the claustrophobic corridors of Tertium, Expeditions introduces a more open environment where danger can approach from any direction. Chaos cultists from The Admonition are also exploring the region, forcing players to navigate a battlefield without fixed routes or clear front lines.

According to Design Director Victor Magnuson, the update represents “the biggest injection of new content in the game since launch.”

Dynamic Runs and Environmental Threats

Each expedition features unpredictable conditions that change from run to run. Players must manage their time carefully as they explore the toxic wasteland, since the polluted atmosphere limits how long squads can remain outside before extraction becomes necessary.

Environmental hazards play a major role in the mode. Twisters, lightning storms, and other dangers can appear during missions, forcing players to move quickly between scattered safe zones while completing objectives.

Enemies are also far more aggressive in the open environment, with Chaos forces constantly drawn toward player activity.

New Weapons and Powerful Items

To survive the harsh conditions of Expeditions Mode, players will have access to new equipment and modified versions of existing gear found in locations such as the Dead Side Sanctuary.

One example is the Modified Grenade, capable of wiping out large groups of enemies in a single blast. However, powerful attacks can also attract more enemies, meaning players must carefully balance aggression with survival.

A New Monstrous Enemy

The update also introduces a new roaming threat: the Ogryn Pack Master. This fast-moving brute commands a pack of Pox Hounds and Armoured Pox Hounds, creating a dangerous encounter for squads attempting to explore the wasteland.

While the creature’s constant shouting can reveal its location, failing to eliminate it quickly may lead to overwhelming numbers of enemies joining the fight.

The Beyond the Hive update launches March 17, 2026, adding Expeditions Mode, new enemies, environmental threats, and additional equipment to Warhammer 40,000: Darktide.
