Indie studios The Breach Studios and Radical Theory have revealed new details for their ambitious open-world survival title Westlanders, alongside the debut of a brand-new gameplay trailer and confirmation of an upcoming Kickstarter campaign.
Since its initial reveal, Westlanders has already surpassed 100,000 wishlists, signaling strong early interest in its blend of survival, crafting, and settlement management. With its next phase approaching, the developers are inviting players to help shape the experience through crowdfunding.
A Frontier Survival Experience with Depth
Westlanders position players on a harsh, untamed frontier where survival is just the beginning. Starting as vulnerable wanderers, players gradually evolve into leaders of a growing economic network, balancing resource management, exploration, and defense.
At the heart of the experience is a customizable covered wagon that serves as a mobile base players can upgrade and adapt over time. Whether traveling solo or teaming up in co-op with up to four players, the journey across uncharted regions will require careful planning, especially as dynamic weather and environmental hazards threaten progress.
The game leans heavily into systems-driven gameplay, encouraging players to gather resources like wood, iron, and gold while building fortified settlements. As prosperity grows, so does danger, with bandits emerging as a constant threat that demands strategic defenses and preparation.
Building Communities and Economic Networks
Beyond survival, Westlanders introduces deeper management elements through recruitable NPCs. Players can assign workers to key roles such as mining, logging, and animal husbandry, effectively transforming small outposts into thriving production hubs.
Coordination becomes even more important in multiplayer, where players can collaborate to create interconnected settlements and optimize trade and resource flow. This layered approach aims to push the game beyond traditional survival mechanics into a broader simulation of frontier life.
Progression is tied to a branching skill system, allowing players to upgrade both their wagon and equipment, opening new possibilities for exploration and efficiency as they expand their reach into the wilderness.
Early Access Plans and Kickstarter Campaign
Westlanders is set to debut in PC Early Access in 2026, launching with the Lake Region, a large environment designed to introduce core survival systems, crafting recipes, and settlement-building mechanics.
The upcoming Kickstarter campaign will play a key role in shaping the game’s development. According to the studios, community support will help refine systems and expand content ahead of Early Access, with a full development roadmap planned for release on platforms such as Steam and the Epic Games Store.
Following its PC debut, console versions are expected to arrive in 2027, marking a broader rollout for the frontier survival experience.
