SDCC ’11: GoldenEye 007: Reloaded Preview

Last year, Activision released an updated version of GoldenEye on the Nintendo Wii. It was more than a remastered version, as it was a complete remake of the classic first person shooter. Now, a year later, Activision is releasing GoldenEye 007: Reloaded on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Reloaded is built on a different engine than the Wii title, which means fans can expect a beautiful version of the remake.

I got some hands on time with GoldenEye 007: Reloaded at a recent Activision Event on preview night at San Diego Comic Con. My time with the game was short, and I was hoping to see multiplayer and not a short segment from one of the levels in the main campaign, but I got a good grasp on the game’s direction.

Gameplay feels on par with what you would expect from a modern first person shooter, but that is not the only notable update to GoldenEye. The game is entirely redesigned from the levels and even the characters to give it a modern take on the classic. Gunplay is familiar to Call of Duty, with similar recoil effects, gun movement, and even bullet impact. Not a bad thing by any means, as this game should feel like the modern interpretation of the classic, and why not model that interpretation after a great shooter like Call of Duty? It is early to tell, and I hate to draw similarities between the two titles, but I’m sure that Goldeneye Reloaded is not completely tailored to match the Call of Duty experience.

The short demo I played required me to stealthy work my way around enemy patrols. There are multiple paths to follow in this segment, and multiple ways of encountering the enemies, be that taking them out with a silenced weapon, melee them, or come out guns blazing, alerting other A.I.

The demo was not all stealth, however. Things quickly became chaotic as set piece moments began to shine in the middle of the demo. This section of the demo showed off the scale of set piece moments that fans can expect from the updated version of the game. From a fighter jet crashing in front of you, to explosions happening all around you, this is what playing as a secret agent in outnumbered situations is all about.

The game is feeling solid at this point in development, with only a few quirks here and there. unfortunately, I was unable to check out some of the multiplayer and the brand new Mi6 Operations Mode that challenge players to complete different Assault, Elimination, Stealth and Defense objectives, much like Spec Ops Mode in Modern Warfare 2.

GoldenEye 007: Reloaded will arrive in the Fall on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
