Nintendo gave a taste of things to come in Animal Crossing: New Horizons today with its first Direct of 2020.
Most of the information was either repeated from past Directs or an introduction of elements one would expect to be announced for an Animal Crossing game in 2020:
Rather than moving to a village like in previous Animal Crossing games, players will instead go on an island vacation with the help of long-time friend and entrepreneur, Tom Nook, who has grown his modest shop into a sizable corporation. The typical fixings are present in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, only this time it’s wrapped in a temperate island theme.
The Direct also reiterated the introduction of the NookPhone, online play, and the option to upgrade your tent with an interest-free house. Also, still in development is Nook Link, a real-world app that lets players bring in past Animal Crossing custom designs via QR code.
New developments were also introduced in the Direct. Most notable was the ability to add additional residents to your island, which, while unsurprising, wasn’t ever mentioned until today’s Direct. Shops and other facilities can also be added to the island.
In the closing FAQ, the Direct addressed some fears that players have regarding the game’s file restrictions. It was previously announced that only one island can be created per Nintendo Switch. Those who share their consoles with others, then, can’t have their own island. However, today’s Direct said that up to eight players can live on a single island. While they may not be able to have their own, at least players can play across multiple profiles on a single Switch console. The Direct also repeated that backing up your save data is not an option for Animal Crossing: New Horizons, but a service that pulls data from the server will be provided in the event that a player loses or breaks their Nintendo Switch.
