The 90’s are making a comeback with Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Rita’s Rewind, a beat-em-up adventure that channels the nostalgia of the iconic franchise. Developed by Digital Eclipse, this retro-inspired title brings the Rangers to live with stunning pixel art, combat, and a healthy dose of fan service.
A Time-Bending Storyline
The story takes places on a “what-if” journey inspired by the 2023 reunion special, Once and Always. In this alternative timeline, Robo-Rita teams up with her younger self, creating a time portal to rewrite history and prevent the Power Rangers from ever forming. As the Rangers, it’s up to you to stop Rita and her evil alliance by traveling through a warped version of the past.
At its core, Rita’s Rewind is a side-scrolling brawler that emphasizes multiplayer. You can team up with friends locally or online to deliver the Rangers signature martial arts moves against swarms of Putty Patrollers. The combat is straightforward yet satisfying, allowing for combos, air attacks, and dashes to counter enemy tactics and environmental hazards.
The gameplay mixes up the action with a variety of special sections that include Megazord Battles. These are giant, screen-filling clashes, where you duke it out in a rock-’em-sock’em style fight against colossal foes like Goldar. Additionally, on-rails chase sequences turn stages into an arcade experience reminiscent of retro classics like Panzer Dragoon or OutRun.
Digital Eclipse’s passion for the Power Rangers shines through in its nostalgic presentation. The hand-drawn pixel art, dynamic animations, opening cutscenes perfectly captures the look and feel of Saturday morning television. The game also includes a CRT filter aesthetic that makes it feel like you’re playing on an old-school tube TV. Remixed episodes allow players to face off against new villain alliances that never appeared in the original show. Hidden collectibles scattered throughout the levels and a hub area, The Juice Bar, round out the experience. Here, you can interact with familiar faces and play arcade-style mini-games to take a break from the action.
A Celebration of the Power Rangers Legacy
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Rita’s Rewind promises a fun, action-packed game that feels authentic and fresh. Whether you’re a lifelong fan or newcomer to the franchise, you won’t have to wait long for its release on December 10 on PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
