Zenless Zone Zero 1.4 Update Introduces New Characters and Sparks Controversy

I don’t think it’s going out too far on a limb to suggest that Hoyoverse is making prestige gacha games. They’re gorgeous, fully animated, and usually action-packed games with tons of content. Zenless Zone Zero is no exception offering somewhat of a character action game with many currencies and agents to pull. The 1.4. Update, titled “A Storm of Falling Stars” brings in two new agents from Hollow Special Operations Section 6, along with Chapter 5 of the ongoing story and a host of other changes. One of those very minor changes got a bunch of folks to cry censorship because they could no longer look up the agent’s skirts.

Zenless Zone Zero Adds Hoshimi Miyabi and Asaba Harumasa To The Roster

Zenless Zone Zero is a pretty fun character action live-service gacha from Hoyoverse. I’ve been playing off-and-on since launch and have always had a pretty good time. If you haven’t played any of the games by Hoyoverse, you’re missing out. Hoyoverse puts together some pretty impressive games on their own but to keep them going and add in gacha elements along the way must be quite lucrative. With the 1.4 addition of Hoshimi Miyabi and Asaba Harumasa, ZZZ is expanding its roster yet again with some really interesting new characters. Miyabi’s character obtains Fallen Frost points and uses them to unleash devastating slash attacks, while Harumasa is an archer that can mark targets at range and combos into triggering a combo of strong melee attacks. I had a lot of fun trying them out.

Unfortunately, it didn’t take long for someone to cry censorship as A Storm of Falling Stars update also had this update: “Adjusts the Agents’ display for certain angles: when viewed from specific angles, the Agent will appear faded.” The horror. The change itself is pretty normal and something I probably would’ve expected the game already had, as you can see in this video. If you want to get an idea on how thirsty and depraved the audience is, the youtube comments are a good start. Although naturally, some of the comments are quite funny. Outraged likely because, just like in real life, these women were disappearing as soon as these losers got close to them, they took to reddit to cry fowl.

“Welp censorship got to us.” “This is not a meme/fluff anymore. It has to be reverted now.” “The camera angle censorship is not funny and a total turn off” Yes, that’s right. This very minor change for well-adjusted normal people was Orwellian levels of censorship for the Zenless Zone Zero community. Some have connected the change to the Chinese playerbase, commenting that this is likely a change reinforced by the Chinese government. Which seems like a big stretch when you consider that in less than 24-hours, the Zenless Zone Zero team over at Hoyoverse rolled it back. The transparency issue was rolled back almost immediately, and with some interesting wording.

Hoyoverse’s Quick Rollback and Response

“• Fixes an issue in Version 1.4 where the fading effect of the “Agent appears faded when viewed from specific angles” adjustment did not display correctly under certain circumstances.”

The word ‘fixes’ seems to me like it was a bug. Still, the gooners won the day and celebrated being able to get close to imaginary women without them being able to disappear. Not the only fix in the update, the maintenance rewarded all players with 300 Polychrome, a currency which can be converted into Encrypted Master Tapes for gacha pulls. And while this change is something I literally never would have noticed, it made for an interesting news day. Zenless Zone Zero is available on PlayStation 5, Android, iOS, and PC.
