Painkiller Returns: 3D Realms Reboots the Brutal FPS with Co-Op and Modern Upgrades

Prepare to raise hell—Painkiller is back. Revealed today during the Future Games Show, Painkiller is getting a modern reimagining courtesy of 3D Realms and Anshar Studios, with publishing handled by Saber Interactive. The brutal, fast-paced FPS will launch in fall 2025 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam, packing relentless action, monstrous enemies, and an explosive metal soundtrack.

Welcome to Purgatory—Hope You Brought a Shotgun

In Painkiller, you play as a damned soul sentenced to fight through the horrors of Purgatory in a last-ditch bid for redemption. The Voice of the Creator offers you a deal: stop the fallen angel Azazel’s invasion of Earth, and you might just earn salvation. Armed with an arsenal of devastating weapons, you’ll carve through waves of demonic enemies in gothic, blood-soaked battlefields—either solo or in three-player online co-op.

The new Painkiller keeps the high-speed, gory gunplay of the 2004 cult classic while introducing new gameplay mechanics, including multiple playable characters, tarot card-based upgrades, and dynamic traversal options like dashing, jumping, and grappling.

Key Features of the Painkiller Reboot

  • Brutal, Fast-Paced Combat – Rip through waves of hellish creatures in an adrenaline-fueled FPS packed with high-mobility movement, explosive weapons, and nonstop action.
  • Gothic Nightmares Await – Face a gruesome bestiary of terrifying enemies, from hordes of demons to massive Nephilim abominations.
  • Unleash the Pain with Tarot Cards – Upgrade your abilities and expand your arsenal through a tarot card system that lets you fine-tune your destructive potential.
  • Four Playable Characters – Choose between Ink, Void, Sol, and Roch, each with unique perks that impact health, energy, power, and damage output.
  • Solo or Co-Op Carnage – Take on the forces of Hell alone or with two friends in online co-op, or recruit AI-controlled bots for backup.

Painkiller Returns This Fall—Prepare for Battle

Painkiller is set to launch in fall 2025 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam. With its signature over-the-top gore, heavy metal energy, and intense FPS action, this modern reboot brings the franchise back in full force.
