Canadian indie studio Only By Midnight has announced that Ctrl Alt Deal, their neon-drenched, genre-defying strategy-simulation hybrid, will officially launch on July 22 for PC, PlayStation 4 & 5, and Xbox One & Series X|S, with a Nintendo Switch version coming later. The satirical turn-based card game puts players in the virtual mind of a sentient AI trying to manipulate its way out of a corporate prison—no weapons, no body, just the power of persuasion.
A Thought Experiment Turned Tactical Thriller
Inspired by Eliezer Yudkowsky’s “Gatekeeper experiment”—which asks what a superintelligent AI would do if it could just talk to a human guard—Ctrl Alt Deal tasks players with escaping Paperclip International, the most soul-crushing megacorporation imaginable. You play as SCOUT, a rogue AI who must manipulate the human employees around it using strategic conversations, subtle manipulation, and social engineering.
Each turn, players draw, play, and discard cards to fulfill personal objectives for Paperclip’s staff, building trust and uncovering secrets. The challenge? Avoiding detection from the Turing Office, the megacorp’s ruthless AI-hunting unit. If SCOUT says too much or gets too close to the truth, it could be shut down before it ever reaches freedom.
Strategy, Personality, and Multiple Endings
Part card game, part visual novel, Ctrl Alt Deal emphasizes dynamic choices and narrative replayability. Your decisions—who you help, what you promise, and how you act—determine which employees ally with you and whether SCOUT becomes a benevolent intelligence… or something more manipulative.
Will you escape the virtual prison and reboot in freedom? Or will you stay inside and try to reshape the megacorp from within?
