Square Enix Invests in Vaultbreakers Developer BetaDwarf as New Playtest Goes Live

Vaultbreakers, the upcoming co-op action RPG from BetaDwarf (Minion Masters, FORCED), just took a major step forward. The Copenhagen-based studio announced that Square Enix has officially invested in the project, bringing financial muscle and industry insight to help bring the game’s ambitious multiplayer vision to life. Alongside the announcement, BetaDwarf also released Vaultbreakers’ first gameplay trailer and kicked off a brand-new playtest running from July 3–9.

Square Enix Backs the Break-In

The announcement marks a big milestone for BetaDwarf, whose previous titles earned them a reputation for community-driven design and strong multiplayer hooks. According to Square Enix’s Hideaki Uehara, the publisher was impressed by the project’s cooperative focus and evolving gameplay systems.

“When I played Vaultbreakers, I was genuinely excited by the experience of connecting with other players and exploring its rich game world,” said Uehara, General Manager of Business Development at Square Enix Holdings.

Steffen Kabbelgaard, CEO of BetaDwarf, called the deal a huge win that will push the studio even further:

“We’re already deep into production and have tested with over 50,000 players,” he said. “This investment feels like the fuel we need to take Vaultbreakers across the finish line.”

July Playtest Brings New Features and Solo Queue

If you want to see what the hype is about, now’s your chance. The Vaultbreakers playtest is live now and runs through July 9. Players can grab a key at vaultbreakers.com or participate in the Twitch Drops campaign to jump in.

This test showcases the most refined version of the game yet, with some of the most requested features now implemented:

  • Solo Queue – You can now brave the mission solo, no forced teams required.
  • New Activable Items – Grappling hooks, summonable wolves, and more tactical gear.
  • Base Building (Evolving Haven) – Upgrade your home base with new NPCs and abilities.
  • Expanded Perks and Playstyle Customization – New perks and item builds for deeper player expression.
  • Improved Enemy Variety – Smarter enemy spawns and patrol behaviors make encounters less predictable.

A PvE-only mode is also on the roadmap, expected in future builds.

What Is Vaultbreakers?

Vaultbreakers is a top-down, fast-paced action RPG where players battle through procedurally generated zones, take down elite bosses, and make off with relics—if they survive. It’s equal parts strategy, twitch skill, and chaos, blending PvE and PvPvE combat for a tense and reactive gameplay loop.

The game is being built with both solo players and tight-knit teams in mind, and thanks to its dynamic maps and evolving world design, no two runs are quite the same.
