Who in their right mind would make a sequel to Bubsy 3D? According to indie developer Fabraz (Demon Turf, Slime-san), the answer is simple: they would. In collaboration with Atari, the studio has revealed Bubsy 4D, a direct sequel to the notorious 1996 3D platformer that’s often considered one of the most infamous games of its era.
A New Bubsy for a New Era
Far from a simple gag project, Fabraz promises that Bubsy 4D is a legitimate, fully developed 3D platformer. The team has redesigned Bubsy with a modern aesthetic, reworked his personality, and expanded his move-set with fresh mechanics, including the momentum-driven “Hairball” attack, a physics-heavy move that opens up new ways to traverse levels.
Players will explore:
- Three themed planets, each with five levels and a variety of challenges.
- A spaceship hub where returning characters show up in radically redesigned forms.
- Fully voiced cutscenes, with Bubsy himself voiced by Sean Chiplock (The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Persona 5).
Expressive Gameplay and Modern Touches
In true Fabraz fashion, Bubsy 4D emphasizes expressive, skill-driven movement and player creativity. Beyond platforming, players can unlock outfits and new abilities through an in-game shop, compete in online leaderboards with ghost racing, and vibe to a funky, jazzy OST by Fat Bard.
Fabraz notes that while the premise may sound absurd, development was no joke: Bubsy 4D is being positioned as both a tongue-in-cheek revival and a serious attempt at making Bubsy a worthy modern mascot platformer.
