Spencer’s Mom Previews Hello Kitty Island Adventure: Wheatflour Wonderland

Today, we’ve got something a bit different from our usual previews and the like. We were recently offered the opportunity to preview the upcoming DLC for Hello Kitty Island Adventure, titled Wheatflour Wonderland. After I reviewed the base game a while back, my mom, Linda Legacy, tried it out on her phone and got absolutely hooked. Because of her experience with the game, we figured she’d be the most qualified person to preview this upcoming content. Though I’ve touched up some small formatting things, the following preview is entirely her own words. As such, I’m going to kick it over to her for her thoughts on Hello Kitty Island Adventure: Wheatflour Wonderland:

Hello Kitty Island Adventure: Wheatflour Wonderland Preview, by Linda Legacy

Donkey Kong Bananza’s first DLC is a bit of a whiff, despite its strong potential. Emerald Rush is a pleasant enough mode to play a few times, but the emptiness of DK Island is fairly disappointing given the price tag. I loved playing Donkey Kong Bananza upon its release, as it felt like a near-perfect evolution of the 3D Donkey Kong formula that was popularized in Donkey Kong 64. I didn’t anticipate DLC this early, so when DK Island and Emerald Rush were shown in last week’s Nintendo Direct conference, I was optimistic. While I enjoyed the new content, it feels fairly lacklustre given its cost. The main feature of this Donkey Kong Bananza DLC is Emerald Rush – a roguelike timed rush mode run by Void Kong. When you take part in Emerald Rush, all the gold in an area becomes green, leading you to attempt to collect as much as possible to meet certain quotas within set periods of time. It’s actually quite fun to do this across different stages, as you can use directional barrels to launch anywhere, buy and upgrade skills specifically for Emerald Rush, and unlock new goodies like interactive statues depending on how much emerald ore you collect. It’s not unlike Super Mario Odyssey’s Balloon World mode – the main difference here being the price. While Balloon World was free, DK Island and Emerald Rush are $30. It’s certainly a bit steep given this isn’t a major expansion or anything like that, especially since Donkey Kong Bananza was already a more expensive game upon release. DK Island doesn’t add a ton to the value, either, which is disappointing. The area itself is gorgeous and incredibly nostalgic, especially thanks to the beautiful remix that accompanies it. The issue is that there are no Banandium Gems or Fossils to find throughout the decently-sized area, making it less of an interactive stage and more of a nice-looking but empty hub area. I really wish they had included more activities beyond just looking around, because the place itself is wonderful to explore and filled with fun Easter eggs from throughout the Donkey Kong series. Walking around (or demolishing) King K. Rool’s pirate ship is a major throwback, and the return of characters like Squawks and Kongs who only briefly cameoed in the main game, like Diddy Kong and Dixie Kong, does at least add to the museum-like feeling of DK Island. The Final Word Donkey Kong Bananza’s DK Island and Emerald Rush DLC have the potential to be a lot of fun, but the bundle ends up being a little bit underwhelming. I wish DK Island were more robust and rewarding to explore, and the price point is a bit steep for a fairly straightforward and repetitive mode like Emerald Rush. If you’re desperately looking for more Donkey Kong Bananza to play, this is alright, but I wish it were either cheaper or more extensive in its new content.

Full disclosure — my gaming resume is mainly playing the Sega Genesis circa 1996. My proudest moment was beating Aladdin, and my low point was not beating Pinocchio — both while my kids and the neighbour kids excitedly watched. Then, instead of playing video games, I “parented up” with consistent nagging of Spencer sticking to 30 minutes of screen time per day. Obviously, not an easy task that I imagine was done in many households. I dabbled with Candy Crush as a stress-buster until Spencer was reviewing Hello Kitty Island Adventure. He thought I would enjoy it, and he was spot-on. I was hooked instantly. He was impressed by the hours I had put into the game over the months — certainly no 30-minute screen time for me. Then, he suggested me for reviewing Wheatflour Wonderland, a new expansion for Hello Kitty. I was very excited to do so.

The storylines, graphics, and sounds are delightful and calming. I was not disappointed by this new content. It’s so enjoyable to work towards and enter a new realm in the game. The adventure with the Hello Kitty gang, including the cute and adorable Cogimyun and, later, her younger brother Cogimyon and the mischievous Ebi-Fry. I enjoy the challenges, with many tasks and adventures being timely for school, with themes of friendship, sharing, and positive language. Storylines tackle confidence, exercise, and doing new things, making it enjoyable for children and adults.

Hello Kitty Island Adventure: Wheatflour Wonderland

I highly recommend you keep the sound on when playing Hello Kitty Island Adventure: Wheatflour Wonderland. The gentle sound of chimes, bird sounds, and the soft rustle of wheat can be very relaxing. I enjoy all of the many fun details, such as the crumbs around the characters’ mouths and the way they have their eyes closed in enjoyment when taking part in the great bake-off. I was also impressed by the shadows from trees and rocks. I love the use of movement when the characters adventure together as well. It’s adorable! Owls play a big part in Wheatflour Wonderland with various functions. Some even have tips! I advise looking for Einkorn, as he’s my favorite one, and he will not disappoint.

The biggest challenge for me is my inexperience in overall gaming. The moment I entered Hello Kitty Island Adventure: Wheatflour Wonderland, I was so excited that I made my character race around catching cute new creatures, picking up new items, and finding beautiful gems. It would have been beneficial had I been more methodical and paid closer attention to hints and tips. This made it more difficult to go onto new tasks and areas. When I’m unable to problem-solve in Hello Kitty Island Adventure, I would use IGN guides for help. Obviously, in this situation, I was unable to do this — a challenge Spencer says comes with the previewing and reviewing territory.

Hello Kitty Island Adventure: Wheatflour Wonderland

Nevertheless, this did not deter me from wanting to play Hello Kitty Island Adventure: Wheatflour Wonderland when it’s fully released. I’ll definitely know for my second change to take my time and pay more attention to the quests. It’s a very fun and worthwhile expansion, and I can’t wait to get further in it!
