Where Winds Meet Reveals Wuxia Combat Philosophy and Seasonal Roadmap at Tokyo Game Show 2025

The team behind Where Winds Meet gave Tokyo Game Show attendees a deep look into the game’s combat design and long-term seasonal roadmap. More than just another martial arts-inspired RPG, the free-to-play Wuxia open-world action game aims to embody the soul of the Wuxia genre, where philosophy, artistry, and combat blend into one seamless experience.

Unlike Kung Fu, which prioritizes realistic martial mastery, Wuxia embraces the fantastical. Where Winds Meet reflects this through a diverse arsenal of weapons such as swords, dual blades, rope darts, and spears. However, the developers highlight one unconventional tool as the symbol of Wuxia’s spirit: the umbrella.

“The umbrella represents the core of Wuxia—reality and fantasy, beauty and danger in one,” explains Chris Lyu, Lead Designer of Where Winds Meet. This versatile weapon can serve as both shield and sword, strike with weight, or even allow players to float gracefully above the battlefield before launching an attack.

To ensure combat feels authentic despite its fantastical roots, the team partnered with legendary Hong Kong action director Wei Tung (Bruce Lee’s Fist of Fury, Kung Fu Killer), capturing full-body martial arts performances via motion capture. Every swing, block, and exchange was designed to carry the rhythm and impact of true martial artistry.

A Seasonal Living World

Beyond combat, Where Winds Meet will evolve as a living world through a seasonal content model, with each season lasting about three months. The launch season brings two major regions, Qinghe and Kaifeng, each featuring its own story arc that ties into the protagonist’s past.

Future seasons will vary in focus, sometimes expanding the main plot with new characters and areas, other times introducing fresh gameplay systems, time-limited events, or social features.

“For us, Where Winds Meet is more than a game—it’s an invitation to experience Wuxia as we’ve always imagined it,” Lyu shared. “We will continuously optimize and adjust the gaming experience based on feedback from the player community. It’s our way of building this world with our players, not just for them.”
