Solo developer Hyokan Studios has announced that Knight Case Files, an ornate retro-style dark fantasy visual novel, will launch on November 27th, 2025, on Steam. Blending a 19th-century-inspired world with a branching mystery steeped in resurrection, obsession, and history, the game promises a narrative experience where even failure uncovers new truths.
A Dark Fantasy Mystery Rooted in Resurrection and Revenge
<p”>Knight Case Files follows Wilhelm, a rookie knight of the Phoenix Kingdom, as he investigates a necromantic conspiracy lurking beneath a seemingly peaceful kingdom. In this alternate-history fantasy, the world is shaped by two ancient clans: the Phoenix Clan, whose members resurrect every 500 years, and the Serpent Clan, a lineage that sought immortality through forbidden magic and experimentation. Their brutal war still echoes through the kingdom’s history, and as his investigation deepens, Wilhelm becomes entangled in it.
The visual novel features partial voice acting and handcrafted retro-inspired presentation, emphasizing dramatic storytelling and character depth.
Bad Endings Are Clues, Not Fail States
Rather than simply ending the game, bad endings serve as windows into the mind of the story’s mastermind, revealing alternate paths, motivations, and hidden lore. Each “wrong” choice unlocks new insights, forming over 10,000 words of additional narrative content that loops back into the main story without forcing tedious replays.
Players will use what they learn from these failed outcomes to piece together the overarching mystery and uncover one of four possible endings, including the coveted golden ending.
A Cast of Characters with Fairy Tale Complexity
Knight Case Files introduces a cast inspired by dark fairy tales and baroque fantasy, including:
- A newly reborn immortal Phoenix struggling with identity
- A twisted Phoenix obsessed with that reborn figure
- A gender-bending alchemist hiding dangerous secrets
- An innocently cruel girl discovering freedom for the first time
Characters’ relationships, desires, and flaws intertwine across the story, gradually revealing layers through in-game dialogue, unlockable tip archives, and expressive voice performances.
Handcrafted by a Single Creator
The entire project is directed and designed by solo developer Shierin, whose meticulous attention to detail shapes the game’s story, worldbuilding, and atmosphere. Knight Case Files aims to deliver an emotional, intricately plotted experience that stands out among modern visual novels.
