During the New Game+ Showcase, publisher Owlcat Games and developer Another Angle Games unveiled a brand-new trailer for their upcoming tactical RPG Shadow of the Road, officially confirming a 2026 launch window. Set in an alternate version of 19th-century Bakumatsu-era Japan, the game blends historical conflict with steampunk technology, raising questions about the true cost of progress.
A War Between Tradition and Technology
Shadow of the Road takes place amid the escalating conflict between the Tokugawa Shogunate and the loyalists of Emperor Mutsuhito. While steampunk constructs and advanced weaponry promise prosperity and modernization, they also introduce new dangers that threaten to destabilize the nation. The newly released trailer highlights this tension, showcasing mechanical threats clashing against traditional samurai warfare and myth-infused combat.
A Story Driven by Characters and Consequences
Players follow a journey orchestrated by Tokugawa’s spymaster, who recruits ronin warriors Satoru and Akira to protect a mysterious boy with immense and uncontrollable powers. As the story unfolds, additional companions join the group, each bringing their own motivations, histories, and personal stakes in the war. Player decisions play a critical role, shaping relationships, forging alliances, and determining whether bonds are strengthened or shattered.
Tactical Combat With a Samurai Edge
At its core, Shadow of the Road delivers turn-based tactical combat with a strong samurai-inspired identity. Each party member brings unique abilities to the battlefield, and their personal goals and relationships directly influence combat encounters. Mastering these dynamics is key to success, rewarding thoughtful positioning, effective use of skills, and long-term strategic planning.
Demo Available Now on Steam
Players don’t have to wait until 2026 to experience the world of Shadow of the Road. A playable demo is available now on Windows PC via Steam, offering an early taste of the game’s combat systems, narrative direction, and richly imagined setting.
With its blend of Japanese mythology, steampunk aesthetics, and choice-driven tactical gameplay, Shadow of the Road is shaping up to be one of Owlcat Games’ most intriguing projects yet as it marches toward its 2026 release.
