Square Enix has announced Ascend the Shinra Tower – Final Fantasy VII Board Game, a new cooperative tabletop game based on Final Fantasy VII. Co-developed with Arclight, the board game is set to launch in January 2027 and is now available to pre-order through the Square Enix Store.
The new release adapts the world and characters of Final Fantasy VII into a balance-based board game where players work together to climb the unstable Shinra Tower.
A Cooperative Board Game Built Around Balance and Teamwork
In Ascend the Shinra Tower, players build the tower upward by stacking Floor Tiles on top of Wall Tiles of different heights. As the structure grows, it becomes harder to keep balanced, turning each new move into a risk.
The goal is to work together through discussion and careful placement to keep the tower from collapsing while helping Cloud ascend. According to Square Enix, players win if they can guide Cloud to the eighth floor without bringing the tower down, though one final challenge still waits at the top.
Cloud, Sephiroth, and Other Final Fantasy VII Characters Appear
The game includes Cloud and other familiar Final Fantasy VII characters such as Tifa and Aerith, along with the enemies they face during the climb. As players progress, foes appear within the tower and must be overcome with help from Cloud’s allies.
Square Enix says the package art and the artwork featured on the game’s wooden pieces were created under the supervision of Tetsuya Nomura, the original character designer and story concept creator of Final Fantasy VII. The pieces use a storybook-inspired art style that gives the cast a new look for this release.
