One of the bigger surprises from this morning’s Nintendo Direct presentation was certainly the unveiling of Final Fantasy Resonance — a new Final Fantasy title featuring some familiar characters.
The new game will adapt the first story of the now-defunct mobile title Final Fantasy: Brave Exvius and features a turn-based combat system with what the press release calls a “modern twist.” Iconic characters from throughout the Final Fantasy series, such as Final Fantasy VII‘s Cloud Strife and Final Fantasy XIII‘s Lightning, also make appearances in the game, assisting the heroes in battle. This is the first HD-2D game in the Final Fantasy franchise, marking a major first for one of the biggest series in the genre.
Final Fantasy Resonance is set to release for the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC via Steam on October 22, 2026.

What story is Final Fantasy Resonance about?
Final Fantasy Resonance‘s narrative is based on the first story arc of Final Fantasy: Brave Exvius, which first released on mobile device worldwide in 2016. It follows the young Kingdom of Grandshelt knight Rain, his childhood friend Laswell, and Fina — a mysterious girl who was found trapped within a crystal. The trio battles against the Sworn Six of Paladia — powerful knights who serve the kingdom of Aldore.
