Onimusha: Way of the Sword Launches September 25, Demo Available Now on PS5

Capcom has announced that Onimusha: Way of the Sword will launch on PlayStation 5 on September 25, 2026. The publisher revealed the release date during Sony’s State of Play presentation, alongside a new gameplay trailer and the surprise release of a playable demo now available on PS5.

The latest entry in the long-running action series follows legendary swordsman Miyamoto Musashi as he gains the power of the Oni and battles demonic Genma across a supernatural version of Kyoto during the early Edo period.

New Trailer Reveals Mount Oe and Shuten Doji

The latest trailer focuses on Mount Oe, a famous Kyoto landmark that serves as one of the game’s major settings.

Once known for its natural beauty and historical significance, the mountain has fallen under the control of a powerful Genma known as Shuten Doji. Claiming to be the legendary Oni from Japanese folklore, Shuten Doji establishes Mount Oe as his stronghold and becomes one of Musashi’s most formidable opponents.

The trailer offers a closer look at the game’s environments and several large-scale battles against monstrous enemies inhabiting the region.

Sword Combat Takes Center Stage

Capcom also shared new details on the combat systems that define Onimusha: Way of the Sword.

The game emphasizes realistic sword clashes, parries, deflections, and the return of the signature Issen critical attack. Musashi can also draw upon Oni powers to gain supernatural abilities that aid in both combat and exploration.

One of the newly revealed mechanics is Reflex Combo. By repeatedly dodging enemy attacks, players fill a Reflex Dodge gauge that can be spent to unleash a powerful combo attack.

Two Oni abilities were also showcased.

Oni Strength allows Musashi to break enemy defenses and overcome obstacles through brute force, while Oni Agility grants explosive speed and mobility, including the ability to run across specific walls to reach new areas.

Play the Demo Today

Players don’t have to wait until September to experience the game. A demo featuring roughly 30 minutes of the opening story is available now on PlayStation 5.

The demo includes the Kiyomizu-dera Temple stage and allows players to experiment with core mechanics, including Parry, Deflect, Issen, Oni Armament, and soul absorption. Players will also face Musashi’s rival, Sasaki Ganryu.

Progress from the demo will not carry over to the full game, but players who create save data will receive the Charm: Kubi Akari in the final release, granting a beneficial effect to Musashi.
