One Piece: Grand Gourmet Review – Kairosoft Serves Up an Addictive Sim

One Piece: Grand Gourmet is a ridiculously charming and addictive simulation game that combines One Piece’s vast lore and cast with Kairosoft’s trademark management gameplay. It has a few small translation errors here and there, but they’re not enough to stop it from being an absolute treat for fans of the series, or even just sim games.

One Piece: Grand Gourmet

I have incredibly fond memories of playing Game Dev Story nonstop on my first iPod Touch in high school, and even more fond memories of reading and watching One Piece over the last 24 years. I never imagined these two interests would combine, but I’m glad they did, as One Piece: Grand Gourmet makes the most of both series and somehow pays tribute to nearly three decades of One Piece lore.

If you’ve ever played one of the many, many Kairosoft sim games, you’ll know exactly what to expect from One Piece: Grand Gourmet. You start small with just a couple of customers on your tiny restaurant ship, but as cash starts to roll in, you expand your diner to ridiculous proportions. Every 20 seconds or so, you get a new request from a customer, a new customer drops in, or a new dish is ready to be made. It’s just nonstop stuff to do and take in, but somehow, it never feels overwhelming or difficult to manage.

Instead, there’s a constant, satisfying sense of reward. Maybe you convert a favorite character from a patron to a fan by gifting them a specific item your crew found whilst exploring, or you create a new set of food using your different dishes and decorations – it feels as though something fun is always happening as you build your restaurant, keeping you from being bored for even a single minute while playing. Plus, designing your own restaurant layout is so pleasant, especially as you expand it with goofy shops, decorations, amenities, and rooms for each of the Straw Hats.

Crafting sets from meal ideas is almost its own metagame, as you can aim to maximize taste, price, or appearance, depending on what you’re going for. A character you want to bring to the restaurant may want a specific dish to try, or you’ll get new meal ideas from new customers that line up with their preferences in the source material. The process gets more and more complex as you add more Straw Hat crew members, each bringing features and functions that add further layers. It’s somehow both meticulously crafted and ridiculous in its breadth of features, but it all works together.

One Piece: Grand Gourmet

One Piece: Grand Gourmet even nails the tone of the manga’s writing.

Even the story of One Piece: Grand Gourmet is delightful, tasking Sanji and Luffy with taking on the Fake Straw Hat Crew from the Return to Sabaody arc after the frauds pretend to represent the Baratie. You go from sea to sea, serving dishes to pretty much every character in the series in chronological order, with everyone represented by cute little sprites. I was amazed at how niche and obscure the character selections could get, with random shopkeepers from Loguetown and one-off supporting characters standing alongside the many iconic villains and allies of the Straw Hats.

Even the dialogue and pixel art feel completely accurate to the source material. Plenty of ridiculous expressions that could only come from Eiichiro Oda translate perfectly into pixels, and the dynamics between the different characters are spot-on. In almost every corner of this game, there’s no shortage of love for One Piece, making it far more than a half-baked crossover cash-in.

One Piece: Grand Gourmet

The one small stumble I found in One Piece: Grand Gourmet came from the localization, which had minor errors throughout. Small things like characters being identified by the wrong pronoun or a grammatical slip here and there – not enough to be especially irritating, but a little noticeable for sure.

The Final Word

One Piece: Grand Gourmet takes the best parts of Kairosoft’s game design and One Piece’s neverending world and combines them into a truly delightful dish. Aside from a couple of small translation trip-ups, the game is a blast to take in. As someone who’s loved One Piece for almost as long as I’ve been alive, I’ve been pleasantly surprised by this and have struggled to put it down. Kairosoft gets what makes a sim game truly fun, and it mixes that fun with the whimsy and silliness of One Piece in a brilliant way.
