The Journey Home has released a Steam demo ahead of its participation in Steam Next Fest in October 2026. Belgian indie studio Joey’s Entertainment is developing the meditative side-scrolling adventure, featuring surreal puzzles, shifting ages, and a story that explores life and death.
The husband-and-wife team consists of developer and artist Joey and USA Today bestselling author Sophie-Leigh Robbins, who wrote the game’s story.
Change Ages and Interact Without Words
At certain points, the protagonist transforms into a younger version of himself to match the scene and story. The environment also forms and dissolves around you as you move through its shifting spaces.
A pulse mechanic lets you influence your surroundings without dialogue. You can also control giant fireflies, jellyfish, a bird, and a 1950s flying car.
The studio cites Inside and Journey as influences, pairing environmental storytelling with a reflective atmosphere and music.
A Continuous Adventure With Minimal Interface
The Journey Home uses a custom camera system and minimal interface, with no cutscenes or loading screens. Its presentation keeps the story within the spaces you explore.
The demo offers an early look at these systems ahead of October’s Steam Next Fest.
