Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess Preview – A Unique Blend of Action and Strategy

Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess is an upcoming single-player action strategy game developed by Capcom.

The game blends various genres, casting you as a guardian to a Spirit Maiden tasked with purging the mountain of demons known as the Seethe in what’s been termed the “Kagura Action Strategy.”

At first glance, the game offers a stylish and visually appealing Japanese-inspired aesthetic, drawing on folklore and mysticism. The character and demon designs are both captivating and terrifying, and the narrative is initially enigmatic, promising to unfold as the game progresses.

Kunitsu-Gami combines elements from tower defense and isometric action games to create a surprising and unique player experience. After playing through the initial levels, I was struck by the myriad strategic and resource management options available.

As the character Soh, your mission is to save villagers and aid the Maiden Yoshiro in purifying Mt. Kafuku. The tutorial introduces the day-to-night cycle, requiring strategic decisions during the day to prepare for the nightly encounters. This involves rescuing villagers, assigning roles like fighter, archer, or healer to villagers, and setting up defensive contraptions.

At night, the demons emerge to target Yoshiro, introducing sword combat with combo attacks and buffs to defend her. Vanquishing the Seethe yields orbs that bring the Maiden closer to the Torii gate for purification. Depending on your choices, you may need to repeat the cycle to gather enough resources to progress. If defeated during battle, you’ll enter a Spirit State, where you can only control the remaining villagers to defend the Maiden.

With its unique blend of character action, strategic planning, and resource management, Kunitsu-Gami offers a fresh take on familiar gaming genres.

Mark your calendar for the release of Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess on July 19, 2024, available on Xbox, PlayStation, and Steam. Pre-order bonuses can be found on the official website.
