Developer DALOAR and publisher Daedalic Entertainment have officially revealed that the first-person horror adventure The Occultist will launch on April 8, 2026. Alongside the release date announcement, pre-orders for the game are now available on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
To accompany the announcement, the developers also released a new developer diary that explores how the game builds tension through environmental storytelling and atmospheric design.
A Horror Experience Built on Atmosphere
Rather than relying on traditional jump scares or graphic gore, The Occultist aims to create a slow-burning psychological horror experience. The development team places a strong emphasis on environmental details, distant sounds, and carefully used silence to gradually build tension as players explore the mysterious island where the game takes place.
The new developer diary features insights from David Álvarez, environment artist at DALOAR, and Kevin Flórez, the studio’s art director. Both discuss how lighting, sound design, and subtle visual cues help shape the player’s sense of dread as they explore the island.
By focusing on atmosphere and player imagination, the team hopes to deliver a horror experience that slowly escalates as players uncover the disturbing secrets hidden across the island’s environments.
Helping the Dead Find Peace
In The Occultist, players explore a narrative centered on communicating with the dead and uncovering supernatural mysteries. The story blends first-person exploration with psychological horror elements, emphasizing vulnerability and the emotional toll of helping restless spirits move on.
As players investigate the island’s secrets, they’ll encounter eerie locations and disturbing revelations that slowly piece together the story’s darker truths.
A demo for The Occultist is currently available and supports multiple languages, including English, Spanish, French, Japanese, Korean, Russian, Chinese, Italian, Polish, Brazilian Portuguese, and Turkish.
