Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake Demo Now Available Ahead of March 12 Release

Fans of survival horror can now step back into one of the genre’s most chilling classics as Koei Tecmo and developer Team Ninja have released a playable demo for Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake. The demo is available now on PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam ahead of the full game’s launch on March 12, 2026.

Return to the Haunted Village

The demo places players in the roles of twin sisters Mio and Mayu Amakura as they wander into an abandoned village overrun by restless spirits. Their journey unfolds through the haunting atmosphere that defined the original release, now rebuilt with enhanced visuals and immersive sound design to heighten the tension.

As a full remake of the second entry in the long-running Fatal Frame franchise, Crimson Butterfly Remake introduces updated gameplay elements while preserving the series’ iconic mechanics.

The Camera Obscura Returns

Central to the experience is the return of the series’ signature tool, the Camera Obscura, which players use to repel vengeful ghosts by photographing them. The remake expands the camera’s role in both exploration and combat, encouraging players to confront supernatural threats head-on while navigating the eerie village.

A new feature has also been added that allows Mio to hold Mayu’s hand while exploring. This mechanic emphasizes the emotional bond between the sisters while also reinforcing the sense of vulnerability as players traverse the haunted environment together.

Demo Progress Carries Into the Full Game

Players who dive into the demo will be able to carry their progress forward, as save data transfers directly to the full version upon release. The game will also feature Japanese and English voiceovers with multiple language options for text, including English, French, German, Italian, and Spanish.

Pre-orders are currently available, including a Digital Deluxe Edition that bundles the base game with a digital soundtrack, art book, and additional cosmetic bonuses.

Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake launches March 12, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam.
