Moore: Suing Pirates is Not the Answer

Given that several game companies are filing suits against PC video game pirates, the former Microsoft VP and current EA Sports president Peter Moore sounded off that those measures will prove to be ineffective at stopping piracy.

“It didn’t work for the music industry.”

“I’m not a huge fan of trying to punish your consumer.”

“Albeit these people have clearly stolen intellectual property,”

“I think there are better ways of resolving this within our power as developers and publishers.”

“I think there are better solutions than chasing people for money,”

“I’m not sure what they are, other than to build game experiences that make it more difficult for there to be any value in pirating games.”

– Peter Moore, EA Sports President

Atari, Codemasters, Reality Pump, Topware Interactive, and TechLand have hired law firm Davenport Lyons to file suit against 25,000 file sharers. The suit demands that the pirates pay $557 USD or face the consequences of trial.

And while Moore realizes that constructive solutions to piracy are scarce, he would rather see the industry look for one than run to the courts.

Because in effect, you’re only compensating the laywers than actually curbing piracy.
