VGA Nominees Announced, Legend of Zelda Honored

Spike TV announced the nominations for their ninth annual Video Game Awards show, airing Dec. 10 at 8:00 PM ET/ 5:00 PM PT. Portal 2 leads with 12 nominations, with Batman: Arkham City closely behind with 10 nominations.

Spike also announced its first Video Game Hall of Fame Award, which honors the most memorable and innovated video game franchises.

“Now our Video Game Hall of Fame will recognize the game franchises throughout history that have brought the industry to where it is today,” said Casey Patterson executive producer of the “VGAs” and executive vice president of event production for Viacom Media Networks Entertainment Group.

The inaugural winner of the Video Game Hall of Fame award will go to The Legend of Zelda series, and receive a special tribute during the Video Game Awards.

“It is only natural to start with ‘Zelda,’” said Geoff Keighley, executive in charge, publisher relations, Spike. “‘The Legend of Zelda’ is a franchise that inspired many of us to see the potential of games when it debuted 25 years ago, one that has successfully transitioned from one game console generation to the next and has continually shown the narrative and artistic potential of the medium.”

The Video Game Awards will also feature world premiers of anticapted games coming in 2012 and beyond. Bioshock Infinite, Transformers: Fall of Cybertron, and Tom Clancy’s Rainbow 6 Patriots are just to name a few.
