Fans of intricate puzzle automation games have a new project to obsess over. Publisher Astra Logical and developer Coincidence have announced Kaizen: A Factory Story, a factory-building puzzle game set in 1980s Japan. Revealed during IGN Fan Fest, the game challenges players to design, build, and optimize production lines to manufacture electronics like arcade machines, calculators, and camcorders.

What is Kaizen: A Factory Story?
From the team behind Opus Magnum, SpaceChem, and Infinifactory, Kaizen puts players in the role of David Sugimoto, an Indiana-born newcomer working his first job at Matsuzawa Manufacturing. Instead of the high-flying sales career he expected, David finds himself on the factory floor, learning the ins and outs of precision manufacturing in the middle of Japan’s economic boom.
Blending engineering puzzles with an immersive historical setting, Kaizen lets players:
- Construct and optimize production lines to build classic ‘80s electronics.
- Climb the corporate ladder in an era of rapid industrial expansion.
- Share your best builds via GIF export for bragging rights.
- Relax with mini-games like Pachi-Sol, a pachinko-inspired solitaire game.
The Devs Weigh In
“We’ve always wanted to make a game about the heady days of Japan’s bubble economy,” said Coincidence co-founder Zach Barth. “With Kaizen: A Factory Story, we’re bringing our signature open-ended puzzle design to a wider audience without sacrificing depth.”
Astra Logical’s Heather Jackson echoed the excitement, stating, “Kaizen will twist your brain into beautiful, efficient knots.”
When and Where Can You Play?
Kaizen: A Factory Story launches later this year on Steam.
