Announced during today’s Nintendo Direct, Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair is receiving a fresh coat of paint and a brand-new scenario that, according to their website, is just as robust as the original scenario. Let’s take a look at what’s coming with this bizarre remaster/addition titled Danganronpa 2×2.
Originally released in Japan for the PlayStation Portable and later localized and brought over to the PlayStation Vita, Danganronpa 1 & 2 both received high praise from critics and gamers alike. For those unaware, Danganronpa is a visual novel with detective elements written and created by Kazutaka Kodaka, who most recently wrote and directed The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy. Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair features a mixture of life-sim elements and class trials, featuring gameplay that allows the player to use clues and testimony to find out who on the island is a murderer.
With Danganronpa 2×2, we’ll receive the original scenario for Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair, updated with new visuals and “production value for modern game systems.” I’m not really sure what that means, but it sounds good. Basing what we’re seeing in the trailer, I can infer this means we’re getting a game made for home consoles and not ported from handhelds. If you play the existing Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair on a home console, it very much looks like a handheld port.
Along with the original scenario, we’re being promised a brand-new scenario based on the original game. The setting and characters will remain the same, but a certain incident will trigger a series of events with different victims, culprits, and tricks. We’re being promised that the size of the new scenario is equivalent to that of the original one, so we’re not running into a ‘Canon of Vengeance’ situation here. Maybe more importantly, Kazutaka Kodaka won’t be writing the scenario but will be supervising it.
Along with the game announcement, Danganronpa will be celebrating its 15th anniversary in November. To celebrate, a fan-participation anniversary event will be held on Saturday, November 29th, 2025 (JST) at Belle Salle Tokyo Nihonbashi. The event will feature the first trial play of Danganronpa 2×2, allowing fans to experience the game ahead of release.
Danganronpa 2×2 is scheduled for release on Nintendo Switch & Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam. If you can’t wait to play it, the 15th anniversary event is on November 29th, 2025, Japan Standard Time, and features hands-on play of Danganronpa 2×2. If you’d like to know more, you can visit the anniversary website here.
