Wildflower Interactive, founded by The Last of Us and Uncharted game director Bruce Straley, took the stage at The Game Awards 2025 to reveal its debut project: Coven of the Chicken Foot, an intimate, story-rich puzzle-platformer coming to PC via Steam.
The announcement trailer offers a first glimpse into a fantasy world long past its heroic prime, where an elderly witch and a peculiar creature slowly learn to trust each other in a journey defined by collaboration, care, and a creeping darkness on the horizon.
A Witch, a Creature, and a Mysterious Oath
Coven of the Chicken Foot rewrites familiar fantasy tropes by placing players in the role of Gertie, an elderly witch who begins her quest after all the swords, loot, and legends have already faded. When she forms an oath-bound bond with an odd, evolving creature, their relationship becomes the game’s emotional and mechanical center.
Gertie isn’t here to swing swords or double-jump through danger; she survives through empathy, problem-solving, and teamwork. As they explore ancient dungeons, lost catacombs, and treacherous bogs, their trust will be tested by a dark revelation lurking beneath their shared mission.
A Companion Like No Other
Wildflower’s biggest swing is its AI-driven companion, built on new tech that Straley describes as the culmination of lessons learned from decades of working on genre-defining partners like Ellie and Nate’s allies.
Your creature companion observes your playstyle, adapts its behavior, evolves new skills, and changes the way you navigate the environment. Traversal and puzzle-solving shift dynamically depending on how your relationship develops, making every playthrough personal.
Wordless Storytelling in a Storybook-Meets-Dark-Fantasy World
Instead of dialogue-heavy exposition, Coven of the Chicken Foot uses gestures, small choices, and carefully crafted environments to tell its story. Its stylized, painterly world blends whimsical charm with melancholy undertones, an aesthetic that echoes classic storybooks while delving into deeper, more somber themes.
Players will journey through:
- Ancient hero catacombs
- Overgrown forests
- Damp, deadly bogs
- Unearthed dungeons that whisper of stories long forgotten
It’s a world told through margins rather than legends, inviting players to reconsider what makes a hero in the first place.
A Studio Built for Creative Freedom
Wildflower Interactive was formed to break free from the restraints of big-budget game development, giving Straley and his team the ability to create smaller, experimental, emotionally driven projects. Coven of the Chicken Foot embodies that mission: a focused, handcrafted experience built around the joy and challenge of forming a bond.
Straley says the game “nods at the fun and simplicity of old-school games” while pushing the boundaries of interactive storytelling and AI-driven companionship.
