Kernel Hearts Demo Out Now on Steam and Epic Ahead of 2026 Launch

Kernel Hearts now has a playable demo on Steam and the Epic Games Store, giving players an early look at the action RPG roguelike ahead of its full launch later in 2026.

The game mixes fast combat, co-op play, and a striking setup built around climbing the Tower of Babel and fighting angelic enemies on the way to taking on God. It is an absurd premise, but at least it is a clear one.

A roguelike action RPG with co-op and magical girl transformations

In Kernel Hearts, players join the M.A.H.O.U. Unit and push through the Tower of Babel while fighting biblical monsters in a world already on the brink. The game combines action RPG combat with roguelike progression, which means repeated runs, upgrades between expeditions, and a structure built around improving over time.

That part is familiar. What helps Kernel Hearts stand out a little more is its mix of themes. The game throws together apocalyptic fantasy, angels, magical girl transformations, and co-op hack-and-slash systems in a way that sounds messy on paper but might work if the combat can carry it.

One of the more distinct features is the ability to transform into a magical girl, temporarily unlocking a stronger form and unleashing a powerful area attack. It is the kind of mechanic that can either feel stylish and fun or completely disposable, depending on how often it changes the rhythm of combat.

Progression, customization, and ally bonding

Outside of combat, Kernel Hearts includes a hub area where players return after each expedition. There, they can spend rewards from runs and customize their units before heading back up the tower.

The game also includes a relationship system, allowing players to interact with and gift allies to deepen those bonds. That adds another layer beyond simple run-based progression, though this kind of feature usually matters only if the writing and characters are strong enough to make it worth the time.

Solo or four-player co-op

Kernel Hearts supports solo play as well as online co-op for up to four players, which is probably where a lot of its appeal will lie. Roguelikes built around movement, attacks, and escalating chaos tend to work well with co-op, especially when they don’t take themselves too seriously.

The real question is how much depth there is under the style. A game can get attention with “fight angels and kill God,” but that only carries things so far. If the demo shows strong combat feel, good run variety, and real co-op synergy, Kernel Hearts could carve out some space for itself.

For now, players can try that out directly. The Kernel Hearts demo is now live on Steam and the Epic Games Store, with the full game still planned for 2026 on PC, Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch.
